NATG Day 8: Something New

Description

For this theme, I thought our Novice pony could try something like color, and a redesign! She feels like a part of Canterlot.

Yes, this means all my future art will have color, and this is her scheme. I figured since I can't get the tail and mane correct, I'd just give her buns. It's a silly thing, but I like it! Also, first time drawing plot!

A friend of yours has requested on r/mlpdrawingschool [link] that this piece be critiqued. So here I am!

The first thing I notice that needs work is the line work. It isn't bad but there are a couple things that stand out.

1. The general shakyness to a few of the lines. If you're going for clean, do clean if sketchy go for sketchy. This is stuck in between the two and thus I expect it to be more clean. To fix this can take a number of solutions ranging from increasing the "autosmoothing" (who's name varies depending on the program you are using) to drawing from the shoulder (helps with control) to adjusting your pen's settings in any number of ways, to simply accepting the shakyness and going for a more sketchy look.

2. A few things are unclear. I don't quite understand the mouth in the first panel. The second panel's far eye could use the outline for an iris. Clarity is an important aspect of art. You want to convey your intentions (or a variation thereof), neh?

A note on eyes: we expect to see some kind of reflective spot in them. Eyes are ridiculously wet and shiny and this spot helps us to understand the emotions and intentions of the character. The pony looks a bit identityless without it.

Hair note: MLP hair is really poofy. As such we see it come up and off the attachment points for the hair quite a bit. This hair is a bit flat in comparison, at least in the first 3 panels. Some of this comes from the mini division between the headmane and neckmane in show. Watch for it!

As a whole I think you would benefit from some thorough sketching knowledge. This guide in the subreddit: is quite useful for this: [link]

If you'd like more pieces to be critiqued, don't hesitate to jump on over and post to the subreddit.

As is always true with me, feel free to ask any questions or voice any concerns that come to mind.

Side note: I dislike the star rating system during a critique. Too subjective.
